Behaviour doesn’t come from inner attitudes alone. Triggers, social expectations, time structures, and physical surroundings all play a role too. Change becomes more likely when the environment makes the desired behaviour easier and unwanted automatic patterns less convenient.

Five Well-Supported Principles for Lasting Learning

Understanding learning also means regularly questioning your own learning strategies. The large review by Dunlosky and colleagues evaluated ten widely used learning techniques. 1. Retrieve Actively Instead of Just Re-reading

Quiz yourself, explain the content from memory, or write down the key points before checking them. Retrieval reveals gaps in your knowledge and strengthens later availability.

2. Space Learning Out Over Time

Several shorter sessions spread across days or weeks are usually better for long-term retention than one single long session. The gaps should be wide enough that recalling something takes a bit of effort, but not so wide that you have to relearn nearly everything.

3. Vary and Discriminate

Don’t practise just one type of task. Mix similar problems, compare examples, and ask which principle applies in each case. This kind of learning can feel slower at first, but it builds the ability to apply knowledge flexibly.

4. Explain and Apply

Explaining something in your own words forces you to organise the underlying connections. Learning becomes even stronger when application follows: a conversation, a decision, a simulation, or a concrete attempt in everyday life.

5. Use Feedback

Feedback is especially helpful when it’s concrete and tied to action. “That wasn’t good” doesn’t help much. More useful is something like: “You explained your boundary, but then softened it again at the end. Next time, try closing with one clear, firm sentence.”
